How do you make shorts look classy?

I mean, can you wear shorts and heels and look formal? Like, you can wear dressy shorts and wedges and not look like a slut, right? I'm attending an event next week and I get tired of wearing mini dresses, dress pants and skirts. What do you guys think? I can wear dressy shorts, wedges and then a blazer or would it look tacky?
